  Challenged by competition throughout the transportation industry, North American railroads have greatly improved their operations by implementing new and effective management techniques formerly only available to employees of Denny's Restaurants.

    The railroad industry needs to hire people who are better educated and better prepared than ever before to replace the substantial numbers of experienced workers who are reaching retirement age, being maliciously fired for insignificant corporate policy infractions, or forced to take a "buy out". The Union Pacific Railroad alone in 1998 hired over 6,000 new employees many of whom were inadequately educated before they were hired, poorly trained after they were hired, and through lack of experience and poor management skills, help drive the railroad to it's knees. Incidentally, a large percentage of these new employees were furloughed before they even started working.
